12 Best High Chairs of 2023

In a nutshell:
Based on expert interviews, reviews from real parents and survey feedback from over 300 members of The Bump community, we chose the Graco Table2Table Premier Fold 7-in-1 High Chair as the overall best high chair thanks to its multiple configuration options, affordable price point and wipe-clean surfaces.

The best high chairs go beyond mealtime, not only offering baby a place to safely sit, but also growing with your child as they progress from bottles to bite-sized snacks to full dinners. And with many brands prioritizing aesthetics alongside practicality, high chairs no longer have to be an eyesore. Our favorites balance function, features and style. Yes, we’ve found baby gear you’ll actually want to have out in your home. (And as a mom of two babies who are now grown, I can confidently report that you may shed a tear or two when the day comes to say goodbye to that gear.)

So what type of features do you need in a high chair? According to Dina DiMaggio Walters, MD, a board-certified pediatrician and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safety should be your primary concern: “When choosing a high chair make sure it is sturdy and can’t tip, always use the safety straps so your little one can’t wiggle out.” Rebekah Kimminau, CPST, a baby gear and registry expert also stresses the importance of positioning and posture. “The most important features in a high chair from a safety perspective is how supportive it is and what posture it holds the baby’s body in. Because babies are constantly growing, to achieve great posture throughout their first few years, you will want a high chair that has an adjustable footrest and ideally an adjustable seat pan.” The good news? In 2019 the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) approved new federal safety standards, meaning all new high chairs meet requirements for stability and restraint systems. Keep reading to learn more and discover our picks for the best high chairs for baby available today—including this year’s Best of The Bump winner.

How We Tested the High Chairs

We get it—parenting requires a lot of gear, and it can be hard to find the best fit for your family. To help identify the top high chairs on the market, The Bump editors did extensive research, leveraging our familiarity with leading baby brands and relying on our own experiences as parents, narrowing the field to only the most popular, reliable and innovative high chairs available today. From there we took the following steps to identify the best high chairs on the market:

  • We interviewed a pediatrician and baby gear consultant to get the lowdown on what features to look for in a high chair.

  • In May 2023 we surveyed 300 members of The Bump community. We asked this sample of new parents to rate the high chairs they’ve used with their own kids and to comment on their overall experience. We evaluated this data and used it to inform our product choices.

  • We checked scientific research and recent law changes regarding highchair safety and followed advice from the AAP and CDC on infant feeding to ensure the highchairs we’ve recommended meet the latest safety requirements.

  • We enlisted real parents (just like you!) to thoroughly test the leading options on the market, both in their own homes and on the go. With the help of their hungry children, they assessed these high chairs for ease of use, safety, ease of cleaning, effectiveness and features, multistage functionality, style and design, and value for the money.

Pairing this rigorous testing protocol with our own expertise and insights, we bestowed the prestigious Best of The Bump award to the overall best high chair. And then we went one step further, using the testing results to identify other standout options that are particularly good for your specific needs, whether you’re looking for a stylish option that will fit your home decor, or an especially easy-to-clean model for a child who makes no distinction between mealtime and finger painting. All this to ensure that you find a quality product with plenty of bang for your buck that’ll prove a good fit for you and your lifestyle.

Not a light statement, considering she gave the Graco Table2Table 5 out of 5 scores across every category! “It transforms into multiple configurations and it does so with ease and absolutely no tools needed. Both my 10-month-old and my almost 4-year-old were able to use the seat comfortably.”

If you’re worried that seven modes will be difficult to navigate, our product tester will set your mind at ease. “Instructions were clear and easy to understand, making set-up time quick and painless,” she told us. “Getting my little one in and out was also just as easy. Between the harness and overall stability of the high chair, there were no safety concerns. And once we’re done using it, only two steps folds the high chair up to store.”

No one makes a mess at mealtime like babies and toddlers, and this high chair can handle it. “To clean this Graco high chair, I simply remove the top tray and wash it down in the sink,” said our tester. “The chair itself easily wipes down with a rag or baby wipe. Keeping the base tray clean is pretty easy, and while there are some crevices that food finds its way into on the actual chair, they’re easy to get to and clean.” And to top it off, all this convenience and versatility comes in at an affordable price point—less than $200—clinching the deal and making this our Best of The Bump award winner for overall best high chair. Best wooden high chair

Stokke Trip Trapp High Chair

Image: Stokke

Having a baby doesn’t have to mean bringing a bunch of bright plastic into your home, if that’s not your style. Wooden furniture is a classic choice that works with any decor, and the Stokke Tripp Trapp high chair—available in a range of attractive stains—is bound to blend right in with your existing dining set. Our product tester gave the Stokke’s classic vibe a 5 out of 5 for style and design, calling it “very aesthetically pleasing… very appealing to the eye.” But this wooden high chair doesn’t just look good; it’s also a sturdy choice that will grow with baby over the years, earning additional 5 out of 5 scores on safety and value for money. “It holds my son very well,” she said, “and doesn’t seem like it would be easy to tip.”

If you want to start using the Tripp Trapp right away, a newborn attachment (sold separately) lifts baby up to table height while keeping them reclined and cozy. Once they’re old enough to sit upright (about 6 months), you can buckle them right into the chair for mealtime. Older children can forgo the straps, using the Tripp Trapp as a regular chair that boosts them up to reach the table.

Of course, no chair can look good if it’s perpetually a mess, but our tester also gave the Tripp Trapp 5 out of 5 for ease of cleaning. “It wipes very easily, and I like that the tray is detachable so I can just clean it over the sink or dump leftovers into the trash.” Form and function in one package—what else could you ask for?

Dimensions: 19.3″ (L) x 18.1″ (W) x 31.1″ (H) | Weight: 15.4 lbs. | Age range: 6 months+ | Weight capacity: 242 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes | Set-up time: 20 minutes

Our product tester says:

Our community says:

Maxi-Cosi Moa 8-in-1 High Chair

Image: Maxi-Cosi

A great toddler high chair grows with your child, keeping pace with your little one’s development—and the Maxi-Cosi Moa fits the bill, converting into eight different age-appropriate configurations. The chair’s numerous transformations made quite an impression on our tester, who gave it a 5 out of 5 for multistage functionality and value for money, telling us, “It’s worth every penny, especially for the quality and many different uses.”

The Moa’s 5 out of 5 ease of use had our tester (and her children!) enjoying it practically right out of the box: “I was done putting it together in less than 10 minutes—very simple and easy with clear instructions… Turning the chair into a table and chair for older children was also very simple and easy. This chair was the easiest thing I’ve ever put together!”

But if there’s one thing a high chair for toddlers should do, it’s last. And where the Moa really shined for our tester was in its longevity; because of the Moa’s assorted stages and high-quality construction, she’s confident it will work as well for 6-month-old babies as it does for older toddlers: “My 2- and 3-year-olds fit perfectly, and they loved using it for mealtimes and during play time. I could see myself using this chair for a few years, as I have another baby on the way soon and he’ll get to enjoy it as well.”

Dimensions: 23.8″ (L) x 23.2″ (W) x 32.3″ (H) | Weight: 16.5 lbs. | Age range: 6 months to 5 years | Weight capacity: 50 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes | Set-up time: 10 minutes

  • Stylish design

Lalo 3-in-1 Chair Full Kit

Image: Amazon

While most of the high chairs on our list are relatively easy to clean, one stands out from the pack—and it’s the Lalo 3-in-1. “The easiest seat to clean!!” our product tester enthusiastically declared. “The cushion comes off and you can throw it in the washer. There are no crevices for food to get stuck in, so it’s easy to wipe clean. The tray comes off and can go in the dishwasher, and the material is super smooth and cleans up really well.”

If putting baby accessories together isn’t your strong suit, don’t worry: Our reviewer admitted that she’s “not good at building stuff” but assured us that this high chair was “super easy to put together! The legs just click in and so does the tray. The footrest has four screws, but they send everything for you to put them in. Instructions are really easy to follow and user-friendly.”

Given all this praise, it should come as no surprise that she awarded the chair 5 out of 5 scores for ease of cleaning and ease of use. But the chair also received top marks for both safety and style and design, with our tester noting that “this style of chair is really ‘in’ right now, especially on Instagram. I’d say the balance is just right—it’s both stylish and functional.”

Even better, when you buy direct from Lalo, take 10 percent off with code THEBUMP10.

Image: Baby Jogger

For families who live in cozy quarters, a high chair that folds up and stores away easily is a must. You’ve probably heard of Baby Jogger’s strollers, which have gained the company a reputation for providing practical solutions for urban spaces. The Baby Jogger City Bistro High Chair lives up to the tradition, offering a sleek, modern high chair that collapses to 80 percent smaller than its expanded size for easy storage. “It’s both stylish and practical, since we’re able to fold it down, and it’s very compact,” wrote our product tester, awarding the City Bistro 5 out of 5 for features and style and design. “I also like that you can store the tray on the chair when it’s folded down. I love it.”

Set-up was “super easy,” she reported, giving the City Bistro another 5 out of 5 rating for ease of use; she “barely used the instructions, and when I did, they were clear and easy to follow. If you can work a car seat, you can work this chair.” The height is adjustable as well, so baby can sit at the level of your table.

“It’s definitely worth the price,” our product tester told us. “It’s a high quality chair, it’s nice, it’s modern and it goes with everything in the home.”

Bugaboo Giraffe Complete High Chair

Image: Bugaboo

Children eventually outgrow their beloved high chair. But the Bugaboo Giraffe is designed to take on a new form they can keep enjoying—it transforms into a big kid’s chair once they turn 3, with an adjustable footrest that will accommodate their ever-growing height. Our tester gave the Giraffe 5 out of 5 for ease of use, safety and multistage functionality, explaining, “It was very easy to get my baby in and out of the seat, and the adjustable footrest made it very easy for my older two children to get in and out by themselves in the chair mode too.”

This conversion is simple and straightforward, and doesn’t require extensive use of tools. “This high chair was super duper easy to set up,” our product tester reported. “Most parts just snapped together and we had it done in a matter of minutes, even with our three children right there trying to help. The instructions were easy to follow and the setup was intuitive.” It’s even compatible with the Bugaboo’s newborn rocker, giving babies under 6 months a safe place to recline while still joining the family at the table.

Even better, cleaning was simple too. “I used a damp cloth to wipe it down after each use and all the food came off,” our tester said. “My 9-month-old gets food absolutely everywhere while eating, but I had no problem cleaning the chair after her meals. The high chair tray easily removes with just one hand, which is a plus, and the straps wiped down relatively easily too.”

Although the price tag for this high chair is on the high side, the high-quality, sustainably built (and GREENGUARD Gold certified) chair is worth the money if you can afford it. “I was pleasantly surprised with this high chair and would recommend it if you want one seat to last your child for many years,” our tester said. “We should be able to use it for quite a while, since it has a weight limit of over 200 pounds!”

Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair

Image: Target

Short on space? This Fisher-Price high chair won’t take up much room—and that’s just one thing to love about it. This high chair attaches to a regular dining chair, making it about half the size of a traditional high chair. It’s portable, compact and reclines to suit younger babies, so you can use it for years. “It’s great for use at home and stores easily in my closet,” our product tester told us. “I love that it’s space-saving.”

While the small footprint is a major draw, our tester rated the SpaceSaver 5 out of 5 across a broad range of categories, including ease of use, safety, ease of cleaning and value for money. She reported that the straps on the high chair were “very easy to buckle and unbuckle … the harness is easy to snap and put my child’s arms through. He was very secure and snug. He ate successfully on his own and he was very comfortable. He enjoyed eating with me and his dad at the table in this high chair.” And although the high chair’s tray was too big to fit in our tester’s dishwasher, she said that it wasn’t a problem. “I washed it by hand [and] was able to clean it with ease. I noticed it didn’t stain with fruits and I had no issue getting off stuck-on messes. The crumbs that were in the crevices came out easily with a shake.”

“The quality [of the chair] is wonderful,” she said. “I would gift this item to others!”

Best high chair for a newborn

Peg Perego Siesta High Chair

Image: Amazon

When do babies start using high chairs? If you’ve got the Peg Perego Siesta, they can join you at the table from day one! While the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) don’t recommend solid foods until 6 months old, and the use of high chair seats should only start once baby can sit upright unassisted, the Siesta converts to a recliner suitable for use from birth, allowing baby to sit with the rest of the family even before they’re able to get in on the meal.

Of course it’s natural to worry even more about safety the younger your child is, but this was our tester’s favorite feature: “The safety is the best part,” she said. “The harness is easy to put on and take off. His body stays in place and secure. And you’re able to lock the wheels so it doesn’t move anywhere while in use.”

It’s easy to clean and store too, she reports. “It’s easy to wipe off and it doesn’t have small spaces in which food can get stuck in. The material of the cushion doesn’t let anything smear in it, and I love that with a wipe, anything goes away. We don’t have that much space in this apartment but I’m able to fit this chair anywhere after use.”

All in all, the Siesta made a big impression on our tester, who rated it 5 out of 5 across every category—and since it works from birth through toddlerhood, that makes it a winner in our book! While this high chair is on the more expensive side, our reviewer feels that its features warrant the price. “This is so stylish and trendy. The mix of colors go well together and anyone would appreciate how fancy it is. It’s worth every penny!”

Dimensions (open): 29.8″ (L) x 23.8″ (W) x 41.5″ (H) | Dimensions (folded): 12.5″ (L) x 23.8″ (W) x 35″ (H) | Weight: 24 lbs. | Age range: 0 months to 3 years | Weight capacity: 70 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes | Set-up time: 5 minutes

Our product tester says:
“My child sat very comfortably… he had another chair he didn’t like to sit in for more than five minutes, but this high chair is different. He stays calm and happy all the way ‘til he ends his meal.”

  • Can be used from birth
  • Adjusts to 9 different positions
  • Comes in more than a dozen colors and patterns to match your decor

Best affordable high chair

IKEA Antilop High Chair

Image: IKEA

IKEA is well-known for their affordable yet stylish furniture, and the Antilop high chair is no exception. Priced at under $30, it costs less than your last grocery run—but will last a lot longer.

Of course, the other thing you probably know IKEA for is assembling furniture yourself, but don’t worry! There’s no Allen wrenches involved here—everything just snaps together. “Setting up the chair was quite easy. It came in four parts and took about five minutes,” reported our tester. She appreciated the extra-large leg holes, which made putting her son in the high chair (and taking him out) a breeze. That extra wiggle room doesn’t mean baby won’t be secure in the seat, though; “The three-point harness secured my baby very well,” she said, adding that the high chair felt “very stable.”

Her favorite feature was how the tray clips in: “Unlike other chairs, it doesn’t slide on with push-in clips,” she says. “I love how the tray clips on the chair part.” And when it comes time to clean up, the Antilop is a winner as well. “Unlike many other chairs, this high chair has a very simple design—no crevices, which makes it simple to wipe down.”

Best of all, she predicts the Antilop will continue saving her money, since it’ll accommodate her child well into toddlerhood without needing to be replaced. “The high chair is definitely suitable for older children,” she said. “The harness can be adjusted as well as the large gap between the tray. My guess is the chair will last a while as my son gets older.”

Dimensions: 22.8″ (L) x 24.4″ (W) x 35.4″ (H) | Weight: 8 lbs. | Age range: 6 months to 3 years | Weight capacity: 33 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes | Set-up time: 5 minutes

Our product tester says:
“My son was eating right next to me during dinner. He sat comfortably and straight up the whole time with no complaints.”

Best high chair that attaches to table

Inglesina Fast Table Chair

Image: Pottery Barn Kids

If you don’t love the idea of a stand-alone high chair taking up space in your dining room, or if you want something portable that can move from table to table (or house to house!) with speed and ease, the Inglesina Fast Table Chair might be the answer. This innovative design seats children up to 37 pounds in a chair that clips directly onto the table by twist-tight couplings. Our product tester gave the Fast Table Chair 5 out of 5 ratings for ease of use and effectiveness, telling us, “I was a little skeptical about how well the high chair would hold, but it was extremely sturdy and solid. And my baby sat perfectly upright in this high chair [despite] being a late bloomer for sitting up.”

If you decide to take the Fast Table Chair on the road, it comes with its own carrying bag, which our tester said was “big enough to fit both handles and the detachable tray,” and folds away when not in use—a feature that prompted a 5 out of 5 for style and design from our product tester, who told us, “I thought the style and design was unique. I really like how the carrying pouch can be tucked into the back of the high chair so you don’t see an ugly tail.”

The Inglesina fits tables from 0.8″ to 3.5″ thick and doesn’t leave scuffs or scratch marks. “I highly recommend this chair if you’re a family that’s on the go and likes to eat out,” our tester said. “I also recommend this high chair if you like a minimalistic approach to baby items.”

Dimensions (open): 11″ (L) x 14″ (W) x 17″ (H) | Dimensions (folded): 4″ (L) x 14″ (W) x 17″ (H) | Weight: 4.2 lbs. | Age range: 6 to 36 months | Weight capacity: 37 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes | Set-up time: 3 minutes

Bombol Pop-up Baby Booster Seat

Image: Amazon

Love traveling or dining out with baby, but hate finding yourself somewhere that doesn’t offer booster seats? The Bombol Pop-up booster is a great solution. It attaches to almost any type of chair and offers a strong, secure seat for your child. “It worked on every chair we tried,” our product tester told us. “I didn’t think it would work on our chairs as they’re slightly curved, but it did!”

The Bombol’s origami-inspired design is unique among the high chairs featured here; the super lightweight chair folds down to less than a single square foot that’s under 2 inches high, making it ideal for packing in a suitcase or even throwing in a carry-on bag. When it’s unfolded, the resulting chair is amazingly solid and sturdy, able to support the weight of more than 150 pounds. “The booster was secure and stable in the chair we used,” our tester said, “and I didn’t have any issues feeling like it was unsafe.” And the chair is easy on the eyes to boot—our tester described it as “a balance of practical and stylish that I would display in my home,” giving it a 5 out of 5 for style and design.

Our tester also raved about how simple the Bombol was to clean, awarding the chair an emphatic 5 out of 5 for ease of cleaning—a necessity, considering her son’s tendency to “get food everywhere.” (We can relate!) “I was very surprised at how well the booster cleaned. The first time using it I thought maybe I’d have to toss it in the wash at the end of every night … the food just wiped off! I even used a baby wipe to clean it.”

Our tester recommended this booster to anyone who likes to go “out and about” with their child, and we wholeheartedly agree. “Traditional boosters at restaurants are fine,” she said, “but I love that these boosters make family dinners so much closer.”

Dimensions (open): 11.8″ (L) x 11″ (W) x 10.6″ (H) | Dimensions (folded): 11.8″ (L) x 11.8″ (W) x 1.4″ (H) | Weight: 2.5 lbs. | Age Range: 6 months to 4 years | Weight capacity: 165 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: N/A | Set-up time: 30 minutes

Our product tester says:
“I love how easy it is to clean, and it’s so compact to travel with.”

  • Compact and lightweight
  • Works on many different types of chairs
  • Easy to clean
  • Set-up is a bit tricky
  • Best for older babies and toddlers

When Can Babies Sit in High Chairs?

Before making any decisions, it’s critical to understand the safety guidelines surrounding high chairs. “Babies can sit in a high chair once they have good head control and can sit with little support, which is generally around 6 months and also coincides with the age we are introducing solid foods,” explains DiMaggio Walters. This statement is in line with CDC advice, which states that you shouldn’t introduce solid foods until baby can hold their own head up and are able to sit without much support, if any. That said, manufacturers provide specific age recommendations for their individual products—and many can be safely used from the newborn days, depending on the seat’s recline options and other features.

Whenever you introduce a high chair, it’s important to use it safely; the AAP recommends the following:

  • Make sure the high chair has no chance of tipping. That means placing it far enough from the table or counter so baby can’t use their feet to push themselves back. Don’t let other children play or climb on the high chair either.

  • Always supervise your child when they’re in their high chair and never let them stand. “Don’t leave your baby alone in a high chair or place it too close to a table where they can reach for hot liquids or grab a piece of food that might not be developmentally appropriate,” says DiMaggio Walters.

  • Take advantage of the high chair’s safety straps—they should always be buckled. Don’t ignore crotch straps; they prevent baby from sliding out.

  • When you unfold a collapsible high chair, make sure it’s locked so it can’t refold while in use.

  • If you need to use a hook-on high chair, use extra caution. Not all tables are heavy enough to support these types of high chairs. Keep an eye on baby’s feet too—if they can kick the table, they could potentially dislodge the seat.

As a commerce editor for Woman’s World and First for Women, Elizabeth Laura Nelson tested, researched and reviewed everything from e-bikes and adjustable beds to swimsuits and skincare products. As a mom to two daughters (now both in college), she often thinks, “I wish I’d had one of those when my girls were little” when writing about products for The Bump. A Colorado native, she’s called New York home for the past 16 years and still looks for the mountains when she faces west.
