AMRITSAR: A growing number of patients from Jammu and Kashmir arriving in Amritsar for medical treatment has not only helped develop the medical sector, but also yielded opportunities for the businessmen to erect infrastructure, catering to the visitors and finding new trading partners.
Dr Avtar Singh, who gets a sizable number of patients from various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, said they (Kashmiris) prefer to visit Amritsar from October onwards and remain here till February-end due to near freezing conditions in the valley. “Every year, the number of patients is increasing due to modern medical facilities here. The same are not available in the nearest cities from Srinagar like Jammu and Pathankot,” he said.
Dr Avtar said given the number of Kashmiri patients arriving here, he himself and many other doctors were contemplating opening hospitals in Srinagar. A majority of Kashmiri patients arrive for orthopedic and eye treatment in Amritsar.
Dr Amandeep Kaur said over the years patients from Jammu and Kashmir had developed faith in doctors and the medical services provided by them in Amritsar.
With an increase in the number of Kashmiri patients, infrastructure has also been developed in Amritsar to cater to their needs, especially the halal food.
Abdul Hameed of Muslim Hotel says that the number of Kashmiri patients arriving in Amritsar has multiplied several times in the past few years. “Since they prefer halal food, the number of restaurants and hotels serving halal items has significantly increased,” he said, adding that despite being expensive, the medical facilities and treatment in Amritsar was better than that available in the valley. Hameed, who has been running a hotel in Amritsar for over two decades, said over the years a number of Muslim hotels catering especially to the Kashmiris have also increased.
“Visits of people from Kashmir, which also includes businessmen, have also led to business ties between Amritsar and Srinagar,” said Ravinder Singh, a goldsmith.
Many from Srinagar buy jewellery in Amritsar and sell it in their shops.
