Arunachal-made TRIHMS Drs to change NE concept

By Pradeep Kumar

The lead one news of May 21 edition of this daily – 49 Arunachal-made Drs pass out from TRIHMS -, evoked a question mark from my old acquaintance from Delhi: “Hope TRIHM doctors are well trained in all fronts. Are you really convinced that TRIHM has all facilities, experienced faculties and other paraphernalia back up by rigorous practical training for MBBS students? Anything in North Eastern states is doubted due to dubious reasons for a lack of ethics and integrity. It’s a fact that unfortunately the perception persists with endemic exposures”.

Though I attended many continuing medical education classes, meant only for serving doctors to update them with latest medical developments, at the advice of TRIHMS director when he was chief medical superintendent of General Hospital to develop some concept of medical science and prominently published news after installation of most of the highly advanced international standard equipment, but I am neither an authority nor have expertise to comment on it.

But, Maharashtra’s Sevagram-based Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Director-cum-Dean Prof Ajay Kumar Shukla, while speaking as chief guest of the graduation ceremony on Monday, had said “You all have been trained by highly qualified professionals with advanced sophisticated equipment to become clinicians or Indian Medical Graduates (IMGs) and hopefully would be true professionals to earn name and fame. He credited Director Dr Moji Jini for the success. Dr Jini, a super surgery specialist, despite offer from foreign country, had preferred to serve in his native state.

“Remember you would always be under medical lenses,” he had cautioned them. Will they not be under the magnifying glasses of society, Prof Shukla?

Union Ministry of Health additional director general (Rtd) Prof Dr Rabindra Nath Salhan, who was instrumental in setting up of this college and now serves as member of governing council and faculty selection board, besides behind establishment of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Meghalaya capital Shillong, was also present as special guest. Will it not be foolhardy to undermine the expertise of above authorities?

Dr Vaisnavi Mishra from Delhi, most impressive, while sharing her 5½ years, said that “My parents decided that I should pursue medical science for which they admitted me to TRIHMS in this remote Arunachal Pradesh. The certificate I received now was culmination of prolonged hard works and determination, which has brought us to the threshold of our future.

“We have developed remarkable confidence in medical science as our teachers gave us hand-holding training as their own children. This state, TRIHMS in particular, has been my karmabhumi for such a long time and engrained in my heart. I would come back in future with my family, hopefully after marriage with my husband and children and push into any of my friend’s home to stay for few days to enjoy the incredible nature amidst hospitable Arunachalees.

While pointing out that though the course is over, she became emotional to hum Abhi na jao chhod kar ke dil abhi bhara nahi (Please don’t leave me and go, my heart is still not content).

Her colleague Dr Tabing Gungli, in his address, proved his sharp memory by recalling date-wise anecdotes of past five years. He exhorted his rest 48 friends: Do it as you want to do it but without expecting any outcome!

Dr Vaisnavi, as a very sharp and brilliant student, had drawn my attention during month-long extempore and debate competitions of 1st and 2nd year students of TRIHMS annual festival Aurora-2022, which had begun on 20.01.22, anchored by Asst Prof (pharmacology) Dr Binita Sinhga, with deputy medical superintendent Dr Taw Kaki, Asst Profs Dr Mika Umpo and Dr Nani Tago as judges. Both were in same Tirap group during Aurora competitions.

Prof Shukla was absolutely right that medical profession has become extremely competitive now. Thus, these 49 doctors have to perform to exist or perish to oblivion. Time is the greatest tester to announce the outcome at the right moment. We have to watch and wait till then!

Moreover, the NEIGRIHMS, set up in 1987 and recognized by National Medical Commission, is an autonomous college affiliated to North eastern Hill University, offering undergraduate, PG and doctoral courses. The hospital was adjudged cleanest hospital (Group-B) in India for 2017-2018 under Kayakalp Scheme of Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and awarded 1st prize money of ₹1.5 crore.

The NEIGRIHMS in NE India took over three decades to achieve something worthy. The TRIHMS is only seven-year-old. Who knows, in few decades it could carve a niche for itself in medical horizon of India?
