Bodies Swapped at Indore Hospital, Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Science Controversy

Indore: Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Science (SAIMS) authorities’ goof-up in handling bodies of two patients landed them up in a controversy and heat of a protest on Sunday morning.The incident took place around 7.30 am, when the attendant of a 25-year-old Gulab son of Subhash alias Bheru, found that body was missing. The staff showed them a wrong body that led to disclosure of the issue, officials said. The family members accompanied with social activities staged a protest on campus against this carelessness in handling bodies. The authorities found that family members of Rohit, a resident of Barwah, were handed over Gulab’s body at 6.30 am, officials said.Both Gulab and Rohit were admitted to SAIMS for the last couple of days and died on Saturday night. Rohit’s family members got the body at 6.30 am and were heading towards Barwaha, when they got a call from SAIMS authorities, officials said.SAIMS authorities informed Rohit’s family about goof-ups and asked them to come back with the body. They immediately returned and the protesting family got their kin body and vice-versa, officials said.Manager, Admin, SAIMS, Rajeev Singh said, “Both Gulab and Rohit were of same age. They died on Saturday night. On Sunday, the family members of Rohit came first at the morgue to get body. They were shown the body for identification. They identified Gulab’s body as Rohit and took it with them mistakenly.”“When the other family members came, they didn’t find Gulab’s body. Later, Rohit’s family members returned, and bodies were exchanged”, added Singh.SAIMS authorities had to call in the police to pacify protesters and they only agreed after Rohit’s family accepted their mistake, Singh added.
