Condemning Ryan Garcia’s Actions, Oscar De La Hoya Stresses WBC Should’ve Gathered “All the Information” Before Making Mental Health Statement Over Expulsion

Condemning Ryan Garcia’s Actions, Oscar De La Hoya Stresses WBC Should’ve Gathered “All the Information” Before Making Mental Health Statement Over Expulsion

Ryan Garcia‘s life right now is the living embodiment of a Shakespearean tragedy. Everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. As if NYSAC’s one-year suspension ruling and his mother’s cancer diagnosis weren’t enough, he has now been expelled by the WBC for repeatedly using racial slurs, and Islamophobic rhetoric in various recorded X-spaces conversations. He has since apologized for his actions but damage was already done. “Exercising my authority as president of the WBC , I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization. We reject any form of discrimination. I fear for Ryan well being as he has declined multiple attempts for our help with mental health and substance abuse,” WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman wrote on X.

It seems the WBC’s ruling was the straw that broke the camel’s back and made Ryan Garcia finally check himself into rehab. Meanwhile, Ryan’s promoter Oscar De LaHoya, who was on cloud nine after his fighters’ victory against Devin Haney in April, now has to pay the price for his client’s recent misdemeanor. The biggest pay-per-view draw in Oscar’s stable of fighters turned into a laughing stock. In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, De La Hoya gave his verdict on WBC’s move to expel Garcia indefinitely from any WBC-associated events.

Ryan Garcia’s actions indefensible, says Oscar De La Hoya

First and foremost, Oscar De La Hoya has made it clear that there is no room for any kind of discrimination at his company Golden Boy Promotions. Wisely, De La Hoya has distanced himself from the comments made by Garcia. Furthermore, he wanted the Victorville native to use his time out of the sport to sort out whatever issues he might be facing.

However, keeping in mind WBC’s recent decision, ‘Golden Boy’ also noted that the organization should “gather all the information” before chalking up all of the 25-year-old boxer’s bizarre actions to “poor mental health”. Thereafter, he started pointing out all the possible scenarios that could be making Garcia act out erratically on social media.

In his interview with Fight Hub TV, De La Hoya said, “You have to gather all the information before you make the accusation the way WBC did. I’m not a doctor, I don’t know… maybe Ryan does have like a really psychological, bad problem. Or you know, I heard he does shrooms or he does… I don’t know what kind of drugs or he’s drinking or you know maybe, he has people inside in the circle that are maybe telling him it’s okay to do this. You know, like a sabotage type of thing, cause even in boxing, especially in boxing you don’t know what’s going on around your circle.”

Nonetheless, De La Hoya has categorically stated again that “what he said is wrong”, and he can’t question WBC’s ruling on the matter. So it looks like the boxing community stands in unison against the inappropriate comments made by Garcia. King Ry’s remarks were so disturbing that even his family members had to step in to condemn his actions.

Family members in damage control mode!

Ryan Garcia’s parents have finally spoken out. In a statement, they pointed out that Ryan’s usage of derogatory terms and his despicable comments on George Floyd, don’t align with the “family’s true character or beliefs”, and therefore unequivocally condemn “any statement he made regarding race or religion.”

In the meantime, the family members are “committed to ensuring and encouraging that he receives the necessary help” for “his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years.” One thing is for sure, Ryan Garcia needs a break from social media. The more time he spends on X, the more damage he is doing to his professional career.

But, the million-dollar question is: Will he actually listen to his parents and diligently work on bettering his mental health? Or, will he go back to doing and saying what he did before? Tell us your thoughts in the comment section below.
