European health chiefs urge ‘safe sex practice’ over summer months amid spike in STIs

European health chiefs have urged people to practice safer sex on summer holidays as sexually-transmitted infections such as syphilis and gonorrhoea spike across the region.

Data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) shows a 48% rise in gonorrhoea cases, 34% uptick in syphilis cases and 16% increase in chlamydia cases during 2022 compared to 2021, with indications 2023 was similar.

“Due to the concerning rise in sexually transmitted infection transmission across Europe, the ECDC is urging everyone to keep informed and practice safer sex as they leave for holidays, festivals, and travel this summer season,” the health body said.

People need to know where to get regular testing and how to get information from healthcare workers, they added, especially “as summer travel and festival season bring people from across Europe together”.

It urged “consistent condom use for vaginal, anal, and oral sex” as well as disposable gloves or dental dams when appropriate.

“It is recommended that people do not share sex toys and ensure proper cleaning and disinfection after their use, and between partners,” the ECDC said.

“It is also important to wash hands, genital and anal areas before and after sexual contact. If experiencing diarrhoea, it is important to avoid sexual activity and seek health care.”

Mpox, formerly named monkeypox, remains a risk particularly for men who have sex with men, as are conditions such as shigella and hepatitis A.

It advised vaccination against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and mpox, and consulting with doctors about measures such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention.

EDC principal expert on STIs Lina Nerlander said the ECDC saw an increase in cases during 2022 and “going into 2023” across age-groups.

She warned of health complications including serious complications from syphilis around the nervous system and the heart.

“If you know you are at risk, you can take steps to protect yourself and your partners,” she said in a video also released by the ECDC.

She added that “the good news is all these STIs can be treated with antibiotics”, but repeat infections are possible.
