How Thailand Became the First Asian Country to Legalize Cannabis

Thailand became the first country in Asia to legalize cannabis for medical and recreational purposes in 2022.

So what motivated this radical shift? There are three main reasons.

First, politics.

The legalization was pushed by the public health minister who ran on a pro-cannabis platform in the 2019 election. He won the support of many poor and rural voters who hoped to grow cannabis as a new source of income.

Second, economy.

Thailand hopes to cash in on the global cannabis market, which is expected to reach $100 billion by 2025. The country also wants to attract medical tourists who seek cannabis treatments for various conditions.

Third, health.

Thailand recognizes the potential benefits of cannabis for patients who suffer from chronic pain, epilepsy, cancer and other diseases.

Thailand’s legalization of cannabis is a bold move that challenges the conservative attitudes towards drugs in Southeast Asia. It also opens up new opportunities and challenges for its people and visitors alike.
