I wanted to kill myself

I wanted to kill myself

Ryan Garcia once opened up about his personal mental health struggles and depression. He was very candid in discussing such a sensitive topic as he went into detail on what he went through.

Mental health struggles could have a significant impact on someone’s career, especially a professional boxer. ‘King Ryan’ is proof of that as he described the toll his mental health struggles took on his ability to train and live his day-to-day life.

During his appearance on Inside Boxing Live, the 25-year-old admitted that his depression reached a point where he contemplated taking his own life. Garcia mentioned that he went through a downward spiral fueled by alcohol as a way to cope and didn’t know whether he would survive. He said:

“I didn’t think I was gonna live…And I went to bad habits. I started drinking and I never drink ever but I was getting drunk all the time. I wanted to kill myself at one point. I was so paralyzed in my mind. I couldn’t get out of it…For some reason my mind can’t get it together, so I didn’t understand what was going on so I needed professional help. I got it, I feel great and I know the things that caused it.”

WBC cuts ties with Ryan Garcia

Despite being open about his mental health struggles in the past, it appears as though Ryan Garcia has fallen out of favor with the WBC.

Garcia has been in the headlines for a number of reasons pertaining to his positive drug test and antics before and after his most recent bout against Devin Haney including his tirades on social media. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman recently took to his X account and blasted the 25-year-old for refusing help and has made the decision to cut ties with him. He wrote:

“Exercising my authority as president of the WBC, I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization. We reject any form of discrimination. I fear for Ryan’s well being as he has declined multiple attempts for our help with mental health and substance abuse.”
