Dr. John McDougall, a trailblazer in modern healthcare and the creator of the high-starch vegan diet, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 22, at the age of 77. His family expressed their grief and highlighted his legacy as a revolutionary physician, cherished family member, and influential mentor.

Dr. McDougall’s journey into healthcare began with a personal health crisis at 18 when a severe stroke left him paralyzed for weeks. This experience ignited his determination to seek better healthcare solutions. Alongside his wife, Mary McDougall, he co-founded the McDougall Program, the first weight-loss program based on whole-food, plant-based vegan recipes.

The McDougall diet emphasizes 90% starchy plant foods, such as whole grains, and 10% fruits and vegetables. Though Dr. McDougall retired in 2017 after a 50-year career, his program continues under the guidance of his family, promoting health through plant-based nutrition.

His insights into diet and health were significantly influenced by his time as a doctor at a Hawaiian sugar plantation, where he observed that traditional diets based on rice and vegetables kept elderly patients healthy, while younger generations adopting Western diets faced increased health issues. This observation led him to develop a 12-day weight-loss program offering personalized medical care and ongoing Support.

Dr. McDougall authored 13 best-selling books, including “The Starch Solution,” and served as a clinical instructor at four medical schools. His contributions to lifestyle medicine earned him the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
