Mayo Clinic Bali International Hospital at WTN Medical Tourism Think Tank TIME2023
Medical Tourism is big business. Mayo Clinic and Bali knows this. The Island of the Gods will host a World Class Hospital.
The Bali International Hospital will be moderating a Global Think Tank on Health Tourism at the upcoming TIME 2023, the Global Think Tank, and Summit by the World Tourism Network in Bali in September.
Since more than two million Indonesian residents travel overseas for cancer treatments, cardiac surgery, health screenings, and other types of medical care, almost IDR 100 trillion (approx. USD 6.5 billion) is lost every year in foreign exchange.
Into this challenging context, Indonesia has now taken the opportunity to catch up with the regional competition and build healthcare infrastructure at the highest international standards. Through the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), the central government is determined to innovate and call up financial, technological, and human resources, at a level never seen before in this country.
The creation of the first Special Economic Zone (KEK) dedicated to healthcare on a 40-hectare land in Sanur is a breakthrough event within this ambitious program. In addition to the development of a world-class hospital, the Grand Inna Bali Beach, a landmark hotel opened by the first president Soekarno, is going to be fully renovated and magnified by a large ethnobotanical garden.
Sanur is renowned for decades as a tourism destination associated with culture and heritage. Deriving its name from ‘’Sahar Nuhur”, a Balinese language that translates into “Welcome”, Sanur has a long tradition of hospitality while the hamlet of Intaran was traditionally reputed for its local medicinal plants. The “Sunrise of Bali” is a location ideally positioned for healthcare and wellness with great potential to become the center of medical tourism in Indonesia.
The Bali International Hospital development is a cooperation between PT Pertamina Bina Medika – Indonesia Healthcare Corporation (IHC), operator, and Mayo Clinic, consultant in building design, governance and culture, medical services, quality assurance, and academics. The objective of this mega project is to position quality, safety, and patient experience at the highest international standards, so Indonesians wouldn’t need to address their most critical illnesses by traveling overseas.
World’s Best Hospital (since the first Newsweek & Statista Inc. Global list publication in 2019), US Best Hospital for seven consecutive years, top-ranked in fourteen specialties (US News & World Report), the Mayo Clinic is the world’s leading healthcare institution, standing out for its consistent excellence, including distinguished physicians, top-notch nursing care, and state-of-the-art technology.
PT Pertamina Bina Medika – Indonesia Healthcare Corporation (IHC), hopes the construction works will be completed at the end of 2023 while the hospital is expected to be fully operational by early 2024.
Built on a 5.0 Ha land (with an approximate 60,000 M2 building surface on four floors), the Bali International Hospital will host 250 beds including thirty-five intensive care units, eight operating rooms, and four catheterization laboratories equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging devices.
Empowered by its partnership with Mayo Clinic, BIH aims at opening 5 world-class centers of excellence, notably in the Cardiology, Oncology, and Neurology sectors of critical illnesses management. In addition, Gastro-Hepato (Gastroenterology), and Orthopedics will be medical specialties fully integrated into this Class A + Hospital.
Considering the recent Ministry of Health Regulation Number 1 of 2023 related to Hospital Management in Special Economic Zones, selected Indonesian physicians living abroad and who graduated from overseas medical institutions will be able to practice inside the Healthcare SEZ without any further training at local universities but with a mission to progressively transfer knowledge and technology. High-end imported medications used within the SEZ will also be simplified through the new Ministry of Health regulation.
Supported and guided toward achieving operational and business excellence, both by the Medical Advisory Board composed of eminent professors and experts from various Indonesian universities, and by the US-based Mayo Clinic, the new Bali International should be able to develop a competitive advantage over regional institutions. Future patients will enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that their medical provider collaborates with the most trusted world leader in the healthcare industry.
Bali International Hospital (BIH) is committed to enhancing the reputation of the resort island as the leading medical tourism destination in Indonesia. BIH hopes to earn trust and support from governments – both at provincial and central levels, as they strive towards common objectives by raising the nation’s potential through this innovative Bali landmark project. “Ultimately, this hospital will significantly contribute to local economic growth. As a state-owned enterprise (BUMN), we really look forward to operating this world-class hospital in Indonesia” said Dr. Mira Dyah Wahyuni, MARS President Director of PT Pertamina Bina Medika IHC.
