Michigan health officials warn about drug linked to overdose deaths

Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, or MDHHS, is warning people about a potentially dangerous drug called “medetomidine.”

The drug, which is practically used as an animal tranquilizer when mixed with drugs such as fentanyl, can be deadly.

According to Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine’s Swift Toxicology of Opioid Related Mortalities (STORM) project, three drug overdose deaths in the state of Michigan have been linked to medetomidine.

In all three deaths, medetomidine was mixed with other drugs.

“It’s now something that we’re picking up in the illicit drug supply or the street drug supply,” Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s Chief Medical Executive, said.

Medetomidine has been found mixed only in street drugs, according to Bagdasarian. It has not been found in any prescription drugs.

When ingested, medetomidine is a central nervous system depressant, and can slow brain activity, heart rate and respiration, according to Prentiss Jones Jr., WMed’s technical director of toxicology.

Medetomidine, like xylazine, a drug with similar properties, is not reversible by Narcan, making it difficult to help those who overdose.

What’s even more challenging for medical professionals is, unlike xylazine, medetomidine is not detectable with test trips.

“We have no understanding of what Medetomidine is by itself, and you combine that with other drugs,” Jones told News Channel 3. “We know the potential is there for the same sort of things we’ve seen with the explosion of xylazine over the years.”

WMed’s toxicology department began testing opioid related mortalities for medetomidine in January after the Drug Enforcement Administration discovered it in August 2023.

It’s unknown where the drug has originated from.

Dr. Bagdasarian said this is not an issue exclusive to Michigan. It’s happening across the country, including places such as New York and Philadelphia.

Detroit’s DEA division has not discovered much medetomidine since 2023, but Dr. Bagdasarian said it’s a matter of time before it spreads.

“When there are new contaminants, when there are new agents that make street drugs more potent,” Bagdasarian said. “Those spread, and those are then found in many, many places around the country, including Michigan, so we really need to raise awareness.”

It could be years before a Narcan-like antidote is available for humans if they encounter medetomidine, according to Jones.
