New Progressive Community Initiatives offers accessible mental health, behavioral counseling in downtown Akron

AKRON, Ohio – Progressive Community Initiatives celebrated its grand opening this month in downtown Akron.

The business, owned by lifelong Akron resident Darletta Turner, offers mental health and behavioral health counseling for individuals and families and counseling education for providers at 7 N. Main St.

Turner accepts patients with private insurance as well as those who have Medicare and Medicaid, she said.

“Mental health services need to be available and accessible to everyone in the community,” Turner said.

Born and raised in Akron, Turner earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in community counseling from the University of Akron. She is finishing her doctorate degree in counselor education supervision from Walden University.

But Turner knows firsthand about life challenges and the importance of mental health services.

“I was raised in Children’s Services. I grew up in the system and this is my way of giving back,” she said.

Part of Turner’s commitment to ensuring more people have access to mental health services includes offering education and supervision for new counselors, who are required to work under a counselor supervisor for 1.5-2 years, she said. She is hoping to develop relationships with local universities to help new counselors.

Turner also offers leadership training and bias training for organizations and schools.

Her space in downtown Akron features four offices. She is planning to hire dependently and independently licensed counselors to help her achieve her mission of offering more people comprehensive and accessible mental health support.

“I am excited about this opportunity to provide quality services in my hometown,” she said.

Turner worked with Downtown Akron Partnership to find her office space. The organization’s Start Downtown program matches business owners and entrepreneurs with downtown property owners who have space available to bring new businesses to downtown Akron, according to Communications Director Dominic Caruso.

“In alignment with Opportunity Akron and the Elevate Greater Akron Strategy, the program encourages new business growth with an emphasis on businesses owned by women and people of color. The program, which began in 2015 as the Pop-Up Retail Program, has brought 18 businesses to downtown over six grant cycles,” Caruso said.

Turner received a six-month rent stipend, which was made possible by the Burton D. Morgan Foundation.

“Darletta is providing an important service to the greater Akron community, and we are glad she chose downtown Akron for Progressive Community Initiatives as the place to offer those services,” Downtown Akron Partnership Interim President Kimberly Beckett said.
