A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Layi Babatunde, has tasked lawyers on the importance of continuous legal education, educating the public, particularly clients on the rights to be informed on components of prescription drugs.

Babatunde, who is also the Managing Director of Lawbreed, the publisher of Supreme Court judgments, said it is important for lawyers to educate their clients on prescription drugs.

Babatunde, who is the guest speaker at a two-day interactive seminar organised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja branch, noted that the rules allow doctors or whomever that is administering drugs to educate their patients on the components of such drugs and its impact on them.

He harped on why a legal practitioner needs to sensitise their clients and if the opportunity is available should sensitise the public on their rights to know the components of a medicine before taking it.

According to him, patients need to be educated on medicines before giving them.

The theme of the seminar was: “Legal Horizons 2023: Navigating Ethics, Liability and Remuneration in Contemporary Practice.”

The seminar engaged lawyers on contemporary legal issues, discussions on ethics, liability, and remuneration within the legal profession.

The administrative judge of Lagos State High Court, Justice Olutoyin Atinuke Ipaye, who represented the Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba in her remark, said the Patient’s Bill of Rights should be made to be part of the provisions for rights to life.

She said the formulation of the bill should be able to guarantee the rights of citizens to inviolable existence, adding that Ikeja Bar has a healthy relationship with the judiciary.

“We are partners in progress and let us keep the goodwill. The topic of the discussion touched on the patient consent to medication.

“Do you know that people are coming to Nigeria to see medical doctors? One thing that has happened in western world is the Patient Bill of Rights. This must be included in the provisions for the right to life as a citizen”.

“To purge the doctors of high levels of negligence is to provide a better facility. Why should we have medical doctors without medical facilities to work?” She queried.
