Severe COVID-19 Unlikely To Occur In Newborn Babies

A new study has found that newborn babies are unlikely to get a severe case of COVID-19. It seems unimaginable that we would still be learning more about the COVID-19 virus after more than 2.5 years. However, when the virus first arrived, it was “novel,” or new, and this meant that the world had to learn about it.

This meant that some information could not be known until time went by, and researchers had enough data to test. They needed to wait and see what groups were most affected, and which ones seemed to be protected. While newborn babies can contract the virus, the severity of it has been under investigation.

According to Medical Xpress, a study showed that COVID-19 diagnoses are found in only 0.1% of newborn babies younger than 4 weeks old. This study was published in the journal, Pediatrics, and it can be read in full here.

They found that only a few newborns have a secure case of the respiratory syndrome, and most of those cases are asymptomatic or develop just a mild case. This can be reassuring for all the new moms out there, or the women who are about to give birth.

The researchers found that COVID-19 was only diagnosed in 0.1% of newborns, and only 7.7% of those newborns had a severe reaction. The median age for diagnoses with 14 days post birth. Of all the newborns that they looked at, there was only one death after spending 11 days in the hospital. The ones who did need to spend some time in the hospital were treated with analgesia, antibiotics, anticoagulants, corticosteroids, remdesivir, and convalescent plasma. Most were able to recover and go home from the hospital, while some did have to be transferred to a different hospital to receive additional care.

This can be reassuring for parents out there, but there was no additional information on why these newborns may be protected from severe cases of the virus. More work may need to be done to look at the vaccination status of the mother, because that may explain why some were protected since the antibodies would have transferred over through the placenta. In a world that is still trying to recover from a pandemic, there can still be concern about the virus, that is still a threat to a lot of the population, but maybe not newborn babies right now, however, mom should still take precautions.
