Springer nature champions open science and research integrity in India

NEW DELHI: Springer Nature, a leading scientific publisher with over 180 years of history, reaffirms its commitment to open science and research integrity in India. Frank Vrancken Peeters, CEO of Springer Nature Group, highlighted the company’s significant role and transformative initiatives within India’s research ecosystem.

Peeters emphasized Springer Nature’s commitment to India, a pivotal market with a deep-rooted presence. Over 20% of its workforce is based in offices across Pune, Delhi, Noida, and Mumbai, signifying the company’s firm embedment in India’s research landscape.

Peeters detailed various initiatives designed to promote collaboration and knowledge dissemination. A nationwide bus tour and research conclave, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Education, exemplifies this commitment. These initiatives nurture young researchers and promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A standout initiative is the transformative agreement with Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), which facilitates open access publishing. This agreement allows affiliated researchers to publish in over 2,000 Springer hybrid journals with fees covered, marking a significant step towards democratizing research access.

Springer Nature’s recent activities include hosting the inaugural Nature Conference on “Nanomaterials in Biomedical Applications” and organizing the Cureus India Medical Science and Publishing Symposium. “These events provided valuable platforms for networking and collaboration, significantly advancing the fields of medical science and publishing in India,” said Peeters.

Peeters underscored India’s vital role in global research, highlighting its dynamic academic environment, substantial research output, and diverse research topics. Collaborative partnerships with Indian academic institutions and research organizations further demonstrate Springer Nature’s dedication to enhancing access to scientific information and supporting scholarly communication.

Despite significant progress in open access advocacy, Peeters acknowledged challenges hindering its widespread adoption in India, such as limited awareness, funding constraints, and traditional publishing norms.

To address these obstacles, concerted efforts from academia, government, and the publishing sector are necessary.
Springer Nature’s initiatives contribute to this effort, including the Research Integrity Survey conducted with esteemed Indian organizations. The survey’s findings highlight the need for improved training and feedback mechanisms to uphold integrity standards and enhance the credibility of Indian research globally.

Peeters highlighted that Springer Nature is spearheading open science and research integrity in India through a range of innovative initiatives and strategic collaborations. This effort is poised to significantly enhance the accessibility and credibility of the global research landscape.
