Swinburne science focusses on and astronomy and medical technology
In 1908, the Honourable George and Ethel Swinburne founded the Eastern Suburbs Technical College. On 1st July 1992, Swinburne was granted university status. As chief scientist Virginia Kilburn explains, within science, astronomy was chosen as a speciality, and the university has now set up a Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav). Another specialty area is medical technology where users demonstrate deficiencies in current designs and the university’s researchers then set to work on real world problems.
