Trinity Health continues ‘Forging our Future’ with new hospital

LIVINGSTON COUNTY — Amidst change, Trinity Health is working to raise $5 million toward the construction of a new hospital in Brighton, slated to open in 2026.

The company’s “Forging our Future” campaign has already raised $1 million since its inception last fall, according to Douglas Ferrick, regional vice president of philanthropy.

“We’re feeling really energized and positive about (getting) that result so quickly,” Ferrick said.

It’s a period of change for the healthcare organization, which signed a purchase agreement with Catholic Healthcare International in May to sell Trinity Health Livingston (formerly St. Joseph Mercy) at 620 Byron Road in Howell. The hospital will remain open until 2026, when services will transfer to the replacement hospital in Brighton.

“We want to be clear,” John O’Malley, president of Trinity Health Livingston and Trinity Health Medical Center Brighton, wrote in a letter to patients in late June. “All services, including our 24-hour emergency department, will continue uninterrupted (in Howell) until the replacement hospital opens in 2026.”

Construction is already well underway in Brighton, on the campus of the area’s Trinity Health Medical Center. The hospital will span four stories and 174,000 square feet, with 56 acuity adaptable beds, 18 short-stay unit beds and eight licensed operating rooms. The total investment is $238.2 million.

O’Malley told The Daily he hopes the new hospital will be enclosed this fall, so work can be done inside over the winter.

“Everything’s going according to plan at this point,” O’Malley said. “We’re on track.”

The goal of the facility is to be a full-service community hospital, O’Malley said.

“We’re going to strive to improve patient care within Livingston County.”
